Is WordPress a Blog or a Website?

Debra Simpson programs WordPress Blogs

I hear it all the time, “isn’t WordPress a blog, not a website?”

When I first started programming WordPress blogs in 2007 the only design, or theme as we call them, were standard, recognizable blog layouts. You saw the most recent post, piled on top of the next recent post, etc. WordPress defaults to 10 posts on the page. And, of course, there was that sidebar.

That was the biggest push back, WordPress site didn’t look like a website, but looked like a blog. It didn’t matter that a blog is infinitely more search engine friendly, not to mention how easy it is to get fresh content up to a website. There’s nothing search engines love more than fresh content.

Nope, none of that mattered….it looked like a blog.

Premium Themes

WordPress has matured through the years and so have the WordPress Themes.  Here are some examples of websites that use WordPress and have a more traditional website look.

One of the most versatile themes is WP-Remix.  There are 10 different homepage designs and an incredible variety of inner pages. As with other premium themes, you’ll be creating a page that you’ll title Blog and that’s where the blog posts will land.

The other site I love is Elegant Themes.  Some of their themes follow the traditional blog layout, but as you can see their newer themes all feature beautiful layouts.

Other Theme Benefits

A popular feature for WordPress themes is how the themes allow you to “feature content.” You create the blog post and assign it a specific category. It’s the same category you told your theme to pull from to feature on the home page. You can also assign a “featured image” for the post and what you’ll see on the home page is a beautiful visual display (the photo) with a caption that contains about the first 50 or so words of your blog post. It’s a great way to showcase your finest posts.

WordPress is the perfect answer for the small business owner looking to save time and money. If you can open a word processing document and create a letter, etc. you can create a page or post on a WordPress website. Give it a test drive. Go over to WordPress.com and create an account. See how easy it is to manage your site.

5 Tips for More Traffic to Your Blog

tips for getting more readers to your blogThe simple truth is that a blog without readers is pretty much useless. If you’ve been blogging for a while and have only been getting a trickle of viewers to your posts, you need to put a traffic building plan into action.

Building traffic is just as an important skill to bloggers as writing quality posts is. Most bloggers are terrific at creating content but don’t know a thing about building traffic. Here is a quick guide to the five most popular (and most effective) traffic building techniques.

Get social!

Social networking and blogging go hand in hand. Your blog posts can be distributed across social networking channels in many different ways. Sign up for Twitter and tweet about your posts as soon as they are added to you blog. Update your Facebook status with a link to you new blog posts. Submit your stories to Digg.com, Reddit.com and StumbleUpon.com. Remember that in order for social networking to be effective, you need to participate with other people on your list. If you visit their links and respond to their updates, they’ll be likely to do the same for you.

Get noticed!

Find blogs in your niche and start following their posts. Make sure to add insightful and interesting comments on their posts. Not only will the blog owner take notice and visit your blog, other commenters will visit your blog to get more of your great insight into the topic. Don’t spread yourself too thin with blog commenting, but make it a point to comment on a few related blogs each week.

Get good use out of your RSS feed!

RSS feeds are a way to syndicate your blog’s content so that it is sent to many different people in their own blog readers or on their own sites. Most blogging systems have RSS feeds automatically included but you
can add a lot more functionality to your feed by using a free service like FeedBurner.com. With FeedBurner you can add things like sharing the feed via e-mail to your feed so it will pull in new readers and encourage
previous visitors to come back to the blog again.

Get articles in directories!

You may think that by being a blogger you can ignore article marketing. However, you can get a lot of traffic to your blog by tweaking some of your popular blog posts and adding them to article directories. You can post your popular posts as articles with a link back to your blog in many different article directories. Not only will you get a valuable backlink but your article may also be used by ezine owners which will bring you
more traffic.

Get backlinking!

Speaking of backlinks, you should work to build backlinks to your blog through several different means. By creating backlinks to your blog, you’ll improve your blog’s ranking in search engine results. You can get
lots of traffic from search engines if you are within the first group of search results for your keywords.

These simple ways of building traffic can be used over and over again to help build traffic to your blog and increase your readership.

How To Monetize Your Blog

Debra Simpson programs WordPress BlogsIn this blogging series I’ve shared with you how to start a blog, what free blog platforms there are and the differences between them. I’ve talked about the different types of posts and where to find content for your posts. Finally we talked about driving traffic to your blog. Today I want to share five easy ways that you can make money from your blog.

Your blog has the potential to be a money-making magnet, if you know
the right steps to take. Blogs once started as a sort of online diary.
They’ve been totally transformed to fit a whole range of needs, from a
place to house an online newspaper to a simple way to start an Internet
stream of income. The following five methods will help you make money
from your blog, no matter what niche you are in and how you are using
your blog.

1. Affiliate marketing

This is one of the easiest ways to make money from your blog, and the
simplest way to start. You begin by selecting an affiliate program from one
of the popular affiliate networks. You can either post a review on your
blog about the product (complete with your affiliate link) or post ads
along the side of your posts (also with your affiliate link). Affiliate
marketing is simple to implement because you don’t have to worry
about writing a product.

2. Selling your own product

If you feel there is a need to be met in your niche and want to create
your own product, you can add it to your blog for another stream of
income. Advertising your own product on your blog is a smart idea.
Your readers have already built a level of trust with you so they’ll be
likely to be interested in your product. You can link to your product’s
sales page directly from your posts and display graphic ads in the
sidebars of your blog.

3. Contextual advertising

Contextual advertising, like the type offered at Text Links, will help you
make money from your blog without much intervention on your part.
When you sign up with Text Links or a similar service, your blog posts
will automatically have certain words hyperlinked. These links go to
advertiser’s websites. You get paid when someone clicks on a link.
Unlike with affiliate programs, you don’t get a commission on the sale
but you do get paid whether or not your visitor buys from the
advertiser’s site.

4. Other types of advertising

Google Adsense and other pay per click advertising programs will give
you code to add to your website. These programs will display ads in the
sidebars of your website. Anytime a visitor clicks on one of these links,
you will get paid anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars depending
on your niche. These ads don’t appear within the body of your post, but
they are based on the content of your posts so they will be attractive to
your audience.

5. Get paid for reviews

Once you have some traffic coming to your blog, you can be paid to
post reviews. There are many different networks that link advertisers
with bloggers. You simply find an advertiser through one of these
networks and promise to post a review on your blog about the product
or service. You’ll be paid a flat rate for your review. Be sure the product
or service is relevant to your niche for best results with this monetization
model.

6. Guest Blogging

You can offer guest blogging opportunities.

As you can see, you have a lot of different options when it comes to
making money with your blog. Try one or all of these to see what works
best for your niche.

Do You Have a Social Media Hub?

Debra Simpson on Syndicating Your Content and Social Media HubsSyndicating Your Content
Show Notes: January 3, 2011

Building your business brand should be one of the main goals you have for your social media marketing plan. What this means is using syndication to place your content on the internet as an extension of your brand, and it’s message. So let’s talk about your social media hub.

The Center of Your Hub – Your Website or Blog

Of course, you know that I advocate your website actually be a WordPress blog, and I can put you into a fully functioning wordpress blog for only $10 a month….but I digress

Your website and blog are the center of your social media hub. This is where you sell your products or services on the web. It’s your online representation of you and your business. People visit your blog, you talk to them through your posts, and or content, and they decide to buy from you because you’ve established a rapport with them.

Your Hub’s Spokes

Think of these as spokes on a wheel, where your blog is the center of the wheel and the spokes are those places where you go and create a second presence, another place where people can find you. This is where social media comes in. Each social media network you join is another place for you to meet new people and connect with friends and clients. Each network is an opportunity for you to build a community. You’re probably using some of them now, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Plaxo, and others.

Once you’ve created your profiles at your social networking sites, here are some strategies to consider:

  1. Build and nurture relationships. When you’re spending time on your social networks, think about ways in which you can build relationships. This can be furthering relationships you’ve already established or forming new. For instance, when I have a new friend on Facebook, I put them into a list so I can look for them frequently, and easily, to see what they are talking about. As often as possible I try to join a conversation they have started, by adding a comment or sharing their information. Don’t underestimate the power of sharing your friend’s links, comments, etc. It’s a tremendous goodwill builder.I use my personal Facebook profile as a way to nurture my existing relationships as well as build new ones. Think of it as expanding your reach.
  2. Syndicate your content. Once you have a blog up and running, you’ll want import it into Facebook with the Networked Blogs app so that you can immediately send new blog posts to Facebook. This allows new friends on Facebook to see your post, and click over to your blog to find out more about you. It’s also a social community itself. You can find and follow blogs through Networked Blogs that extend your online community.
  3. Make new friends. I add friends in Facebook who I have never met. I may see something they said to one of my friends, or pulled them up through a search that intrigued me, so I send a friend request. When you do invite them to be a friend, make sure to add a personal message letting them know why you’re sending them a friend request. Again, having a common interest or two really helps break the ice. To expand your community, you need to feel comfortable reaching out to new people. Remember that common interests help us form those online relationships a bit easier. You never know who your online friends know. It’s expanding your sphere of influence.
  4. Show who you are. Transparency is key to your social media strategy. Keeping in mind that all you post on the internet, stays on the internet, show a little personality in your interactions with others online. Don’t be afraid to talk about your interests, the stories that illustrate your point in a blog post.
  5. Share info you think your friends would be interested in. You shouldn’t be broadcasting your marketing message 24/7. Sharing is one of the most expedient ways to create solid relationships. Be seen as someone who thinks of others.

Those are some tips on creating a hub for your social media using your blog’s rss feed to deliver your blog posts to your social networking sites and how you can create and build profitable relationships online.
